Review: “Love Was Right” by The Unfortunates

The Unfortunates are a five piece band from Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. They consist of  Tanner Gordon on lead vocals, Leo Contessa on lead guitar, Nathan Stamhuis on rhythm guitar, Tim Plamondon on bass and Brendan McGongile on drums. On June 22nd 2018 they released their self titled album which included the track “Love Was Right”, on January 18th 2019 they released their music video for it. What did we think of the track overall? Let’s find out!

The track begins with a upbeat sounding guitar, a classic touch. Followed by some little licks here and there from another guitar which blends quite well. The singer has got a cracking voice, really blends well. What then follows is a small taste of the band kicking off which was a great musical decision cause it allows for a good rollercoaster ride. There’s plenty of little licks here and there, not quite a wall of sound but definitely a fence – a good place to grow from. The “Uh oh” sections are somewhat of an already done attempt at a hook, but a good effort nonetheless. The mix sounds great here, a really solid job! Lyrics leave it somewhat open to interpretation, while there is no doubt that the key theme here is love (what isn’t) – we couldn’t quite tell if it was unrequited love or just reminiscing, guess that’s the charm of it! The music video is cool too, it’s got ASL (American Sign Language) – an ambitious goal which seems (at least from the comment section) to have paid off somewhat.

So overall a solid effort from these guys!
