Frally is an artist who, according to their Spotify bio, channels “the quiet of the Australian countryside, the dynamic licks of Nashville, the weary forthright grit of Brooklyn and the searing sunshine of Los Angeles…”. On April 10th 2020, they released a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s classic tune “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”. What did we think of it? Here goes!
This version is, musically, a complete departure from the original. If you go into this expecting a faithful recreation of the hairspray-laden 80s hit, you’d be sorely disappointed. Nonetheless, Frally’s version is a unique take of it – with a much more sombre and “haunting” feel. This kind of version, we’d imagine, would be right at home with some sort of Netflix original/documentary. Indeed this track has been featured in a documentary about Paris Hilton, so there you go. This version is just shy of a minute shorter than the original, which makes it rather optimal for radio play. The sound is big but minimal at the same time, there’s plenty going on behind the vocals as it were so long as you catch it!
The question we ask ourselves going into any review is, is this interesting? Well it’s a very subjective term which we stress that readers should consider with an open mind. With regards, to this track – it is certainly interesting. Frally has added their own stylings to a well established “80s standard” which just about makes it their own. It is rather impressive on the whole with an exquisite mix and master, choc full of dynamics to make this possibly one of the best covers we’ve ever heard.
