HeIsTheArtist has been covered before on Call That Music? You can read our previous post about him here. On October 15th 2021, he released a brand new single titled “Sumthin’ Sumthin'” which features a Disco Funk Version. We’ve listened to both and here’s what we thought.
Well, this is a cover of “Sumthin’ Sumthin'” by Maxwell. Apparently. We understand that sometimes various artists and bands don’t also try and recreate the same sound of the tracks they’re covering. More often than not, they almost always try and add their own sound. However, if you know the original version – you may be confused, as we are. This has very, very little resemblance to the original. Don’t get us wrong – the instrumentation on both versions provided is actually pretty good. There has clearly been a step up in the mixing and mastering process for HeIsTheArtist when compared with the last track we covered.
Where these tracks totally fall down is the vocal performance. What is going on here? We can’t tell. We can barely make out a word that is sung. It’s a little bit clearer on the “disco-funk” version but not by much. We have absolutely no idea what went wrong here but it just sounds absolutely off and really takes away completely from the excellent music behind this chopped up noise.
We acknowledge, as stated previously, that this has been an improvement somewhat when compared to the last track we covered. However, critical work is needed to just get better at these vocals. If a producer green-lit this for release or whatever, get a new one in. Very disappointing, especially since things like the sax, drums, bass (literally everything else) are on top form with regards to the performances.
