Cary Shields – “In The Morning”

Cary Shields is an artist, we assume from Kentucky (or so we could find out) – anyway! On July 1st 2022, he released a brand new single titled “In The Morning” – what did we think? Here goes!

The biggest thing we could point out on this song is the drums, which is fitting because Cary himself is a drummer – so that passes the proficiency check. There’s a lot in the mix that compliments them and gets it all going right from the get-go. How we’d describe the whole vibe of the track is “you know that lose long-lost B-sides to Led Zeppelin IV’s singles? Well we found one of them”. There’s no doubt any seasoned muso would miss the comparison since it’s there staring you right in the face. This is definitely a “southern” song, maybe we’re assuming too much from the banjo but the guitar licks towards the end suggest it. Those with a keen ear won’t miss the vocal harmonies further down the runtime and it’s certainly a nice touch.

On the whole, the track is fairly decent in terms of its mix and master, nothing sticks out too much nor peaks it does the job. In terms of the composition, it’s pretty straightforward – you won’t get caught off guard. The production is interesting, the song itself isn’t great and it isn’t terrible but barely just right. We appreciate the amount of time and effort that’s gone into making this music, it just needs more interesting components and perhaps even the main vocals need to be redone since some of the lyrics were crammed into the melody. The melody in the chorus sounded performed half-baked.

If you’re not too fussed about your music, and want something to throw into the background that may or may not hit a subjective “chill” factor – go for it.
