Captain Mike & The Totems is a band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Fronted by Captain Mike (Michael Goldberg, lead vocals and guitar), they consist also of Jonny Herchert (guitar, backing vocals), Michael Waldman (bass, backing vocals) and David J Russ (drums and percussion). On September 1st 2020, the band released a brand new double release titled “Double Single”, we checked out their track “Far To Go”. What did we think? Here goes!
If you hear this and think “this sounds familiar”, you’d be forgiven (just listen to “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock or “The Pusher” by Steppenwolf). Regardless, it’s good that it’s still maintaining usage. Now back to the track! What’s cool about this is that there are many elements throughout which you’d have to pay very close attention to. The use of keys underneath in the mix provides fullness and definition to this track. The drums and percussion sound killer, the bass is right there in the pocket and just gives this track such beautifully placed low end. Every end of the audible spectrum is covered in this track – Captain Mike & The Totems have really nailed it with this track.
The lyrics aren’t too preachy, they get straight to the point with little-to-no waffle. The guitar solo is pretty good and the ending is tight with excellent vocal harmonies, there are times when the main vocals slightly falter but all other elements of this track make up for that. It’s a beautifully mixed and mastered song to an extremely high standard. You won’t go wrong listening to this!
